St Thomas Accommodations: Small Hotels and Inns

When you're looking at St Thomas accommodations, you may want to consider the smaller hotels, inns, and bed & breakfasts on the island.

These places often have a charm and intimacy that you just don't find in the larger hotels and resorts. They often offer the added advantage of homey, personalized service.

Some are quite modest, good if you're on a budget, while others are quite posh and luxurious, with prices to match.

Remember, rates are for the high-season, and don't include the 8% room tax and 10% service charge.

Here are some good places to consider in smaller St Thomas accommodations:

Hotel 1829 is right in town just a few blocks from the shopping district. It was originally built (in 1829, of course) as a private mansion by a wealthy French sea captain.

It's among the most historically charming of all St Thomas accommodations, with bedrooms and facilities furnished and
decorated in authentic old-island style.

The fifteen rooms have all the modern conveniences, like A/C and TV, and most rooms have water views. There's a lush garden courtyard with a small pool.

The building has four floors and no elevators, so if stairs are a problem, be sure to let the staff know when you make your reservations. Hotel 1829 does not accept children under the age of 12.

Rates are $125 to $260.

Danish Chalet Inn is a clean, pleasant fifteen-room inn just a short walk from the center of town. About half the rooms have private baths, the rest share baths. Most rooms have A/C and refrigerators.

The inn is on a hillside with very good views over Charlotte Amalie's harbor. No pool, but they have a good-sized sundeck and jacuzzi spa.

Among the best-priced of all St Thomas accommodations. They also don't charge the usual 10% service charge.

Rates are $79 to $99 a night.

The rooms have A/C, TV, private baths, fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker. Rooms also have excellent panoramic views of the harbor and the surrounding hills. Helpful, service-oriented management.

Rates start at $135 nightly.

Hotel Mafolie is one of the most charming of all St Thomas Hotels. Set on a hill high above Charlotte Amalie, the views here are nothing short of spectacular.

Twenty-two rooms with A/C, TV, phone, and fridge. Some rooms have balconies to enjoy the great views. This is a family-run place, with a highly regarded restaurant.

There's also a pool and daily shuttles to Magen's Bay Beach and downtown. Mafolie is situated on a fairly busy road, so it can get somewhat noisy during rush hour.

Rates are $129 to $169 a night.
